DNA tests probe the genomic ancestry of Brazilians BJMBR
Pena,S.D.J.; Bastos-Rodrigues,L.; Pimenta,J.R.; Bydlowski,S.P..
We review studies from our laboratories using different molecular tools to characterize the ancestry of Brazilians in reference to their Amerindian, European and African roots. Initially we used uniparental DNA markers to investigate the contribution of distinct Y chromosome and mitochondrial DNA lineages to present-day populations. High levels of genetic admixture and strong directional mating between European males and Amerindian and African females were unraveled. We next analyzed different types of biparental autosomal polymorphisms. Especially useful was a set of 40 insertion-deletion polymorphisms (indels) that when studied worldwide proved exquisitely sensitive in discriminating between Amerindians, Europeans and Sub-Saharan Africans. When applied...

Melanoma, ancestry and MC1R variants in the Uruguayan admixed population JBAG
Hochmann,J; Cappetta,M; Pérez,J; Colistro,V; Nicolleti,S; Larre Borges,A; Ribas,G; Martínez Asuaga,M; Bertoni,B.
Malignant melanoma (MM) is the most dangerous type of skin cancer and the main cause of death produced by skin diseases. In Uruguay, the incidence rate is 3.8/100,000, one of the highest in Latin America. We analyzed the contribution of ancestry and MC1R as a candidate gene for sporadic melanoma in Uruguay. Our objective wasto investigate the possible associations between ancestry and the MC1R gene with sporadic melanoma in the Uruguayan population. To that end, one hundred patients with sporadic MM and 107 controls were recruited. Phenotypic factors and lifestyle were evaluated as risk factors. At the same time, we analyzed fiveancestry informative markers, the MC1R variants (R151, R160 and D294H) and five tag-SNPs. Phototype, atypical nevi, sunburns and...

Pedigree analysis on the population of Gir cattle in Northeast Brazil R. Bras. Zootec.
Oliveira,Aracele Prates de; Malhado,Carlos Henrique Mendes; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza; Martins Filho,Raimundo; Silveira,Éderson Silva; Souza,Laaina de Andrade; Muniz,Lorena Mirelle Santos; Azevêdo,Danielle Maria Machado Ribeiro.
The objective of this study was to characterize the population genetic structure of the Gir breed in the Northeast of Brazil. The data used in this study were taken from pedigree information of 8,897 Gir animals between 1957 and 2007, obtained from the Brazilian Zebu Breeders Association (ABCZ). The program ENDOG was used to estimate the parameters based on the probability gene origin. From the amount of the studied animals, 67.22%, 18.41% and 3.15% had complete pedigree only on the first, second and third parentage, respectively. The number of ancestors that contributed for the reference population was 2,755, of which only 171 explain the 50% genetic variability of the population. The actual number of founder herds was 168 and the effective number of...

Uniparental ancestry markers in Chilean populations Genet. Mol. Biol.
Vieira-Machado,Camilla Dutra; Tostes,Maluah; Alves,Gabrielle; Nazer,Julio; Martinez,Liliana; Wettig,Elisabeth; Pizarro Rivadeneira,Oscar; Diaz Caamaño,Marcela; Larenas Ascui,Jessica; Pavez,Pedro; Dutra,Maria da Graça; Castilla,Eduardo Enrique; Orioli,Ieda Maria.
Abstract The presence of Native Americans, Europeans, and Africans has led to the development of a multi-ethnic, admixed population in Chile. This study aimed to contribute to the characterization of the uniparental genetic structure of three Chilean regions. Newborns from seven hospitals in Independencia, Providencia, Santiago, Curicó, Cauquenes, Valdívia, and Puerto Montt communes, belonging to the Chilean regions of Santiago, Maule, and Los Lagos, were studied. The presence of Native American mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroups and two markers present in the non-recombinant region of the Y chromosome, DYS199 and DYS287, indicative of Native American and African ancestry, respectively, was determined. A high Native American matrilineal contribution and...
